iPhone: Know How to Remove Location Data from Photos and Videos before Sharing

When you capture a photo, your iPhone automatically uses its GPS smarts to record your location. It is a convenient feature if you want to find your photos according to the exact location. Moreover, it allows you to catalog multiple images based on locations or occasions that you have attended. You can even sort out your photoshoots and track your family members or friends through Family Memory Manager. Since this activity can be done for the entire year, it can be beneficial to settle disputes.

Most of the time, iPhones welcome photo location metadata. But, sometimes iPhones do not invite the photo location metadata while taking the photos. Therefore, when you share a photo with geo location coordinates tagged, viewers can figure out the location where you took the snap. You might not be comfortable with this option while posting photos on social media. Thus, you won’t want to disclose your location to those who are not so close to you or your family. Thus, we have discussed how to remove location data from photos and videos before making them public.

Protect Your Privacy by Removing Location from Your Shots: A Deeper Insight

Apple has become strict about security and anti-tracking technologies with the launch of iOS 13. One such security feature is the removal of location data from the photos and videos that you can capture. In case you want to create any movie then, also you have the option to remove its location. Thus, you can confidently send these photos, videos, and movies to a friend via Mail, Messenger, Twitter, or whatever you prefer.

Day by day, the world is getting full of harmful persons. So, if your snaps carry the location info, then, they might try to reach you using that. Even they can harm you to meet their purpose. Then why not taking a preventive measure beforehand. So, turn off the location option by using the steps given below.

  1. Open the Camera app to shoot photos or videos.
  2. When you are done, select the album or section where the photo is saved.
  3. In case you want to share a single photo or video then, find it and tap on the share button.
  4. For multiple photos or videos, navigate to the album or section view and tap the ‘Select’ button.
  5. Select all the files that you would wish to send and tap on the ‘Share’ button.
  6. If your phone runs on iOS 13, then a new ‘Options’ button will appear when you are about to share in the Photos app.
  7. Tap on the ‘Options’ button and swipe the toggle switch for location on the next pane.
  8. Then, tap the ‘Done’ button at the top right corner of the screen.
  9. Now, select a conduit that you want to use for sharing your media.
  10. Now, the receiver won’t be able to track the location where you captured the photos or videos.

Note: Don’t forget to reset the toggle after sending each set of photos or videos. Only the iPhone Photos app allows you to remove locations from your photos and videos. Thus, you have to use this app for removing your locations.

Permanent Way to Disable Location Services on Your iPhone:

Go by the following steps in case you want to turn off location services permanently. If your iPhone runs on iOS 12 then, also you will need to follow this process. Permanent removal of geotags will help you to hide your locations every time you will take any photos or videos.

  1. Turn on your iPhone and launch the Settings app on the Home screen.
  2. Locate and tap on the ‘Privacy’ section at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Choose ‘Location Services’ and tap ‘Camera.’
  4. Select the ‘Never’ option and tap the ‘OK’ button if any confirmation dialog box pops up.

So, from now onwards the camera app won’t record the location information in shots on your iPhone. Since the location information is missing, there is no question of sharing it while sending or uploading your photos and videos.

As you turn off the location service, the location switch might disappear from your iPhone Settings. If so happens then, restart your iPhone the next time when you would like to save locations on your photos and videos.

It is not a convenient method for those who want to save location information for their personal use. In case you too have the same opinion, then look for a third-party app that can remove your iPhone camera metadata. Then, download and install one such reliable app on your iPhone.

Search the internet for a couple of favorite apps that iPhone users are using. Also, ensure that the app is supported by the iOS you are using. Hence, check their ratings and features to identify the one that is safe to install on your iPhone. It is all you need to know for removing location data from your photos, videos, or movies.
